How good can it get? I arrived on the island with my new Metro 6R4 having had a complete rebuild over the winter by Ian Chamberlain Motorsport. The Metro now fitted with a Maktrak sequential gearbox offering myself a very different experience to my last visit to the island in 1985 when I tackled the Manx roads in a Nova, now the challenge was to squeeze a Metro down those technically challenging lanes. A recce that was mainly in the rain was followed by a very dry rally. Tyre choice not a problem but getting to grips with the awesome power and braking of the 6R4 in the tight twisty sections was another thing. A consistent run over the stages of the first half of the rally saw us in the top 20, all going well until stage 10 Maughold when a high speed spin left us bewildered by the fact we did not hit anything, struggling to re-start the car meant we lost about 20 seconds. Pressing on and committing more to the bends particularly through the Druidale and East Baldwin sections saw us creeping into the top ten times resulting in us achieving 3rd in class and 16 overall.
