TOLEMAN

After the Range Rover of 1987 Toleman Motorsport debuted the TG88 Metro Raider for the 1988 Paris-Dakar Rally. Lengthened by 9 1/2 inches and fitted with a JE Motors 3.9 V8 engine Toleman and Barry Lee started out on the prologue at Cergy Pontoise nr Paris before the the first stages in the desert. Once into the desert a lot of the cars broke down. The TG88 took just over 9 hours to complete its first desert stage while its support truck took 22 hours to catch up and the team ran out of time.

Through 1988 Toleman Motorsport enlisted the help of Adrian Reynard to re-design their desert race and came up with the T89 Enduro ready for the start of the 1989 Paris-Dakar Rally. From some of the pics above when the car was mainly white this was when the team tested in the Tunisian desert. The Dakar started out well, but small problems when the car wouldnt start at Sabha and then an accident involving John West one of their service crew during a refueling point when they rolled the fast Range Rover support which later caught fire and burnt out meant they had to use other peoples trucks to carry spares. the team retired again. The car was sold to Belgian driver Jacky Loomans who used it on the UAE desert challenge and has used it at Goodwood to show it off. To think this car evovled from a Metro 6R4 is amazing.
